El Alamein
The Battle of El Alamein was one of the well-known decisive battles of World War II. Fought in the deserts of North Africa between the two great generals, Montgomery of England (who was brought in to replace General Auchinleck), and Rommel of Germany. The resulting Allied victory led to the retreat of the Geramn Afrika Korps, and their eventual surrender in North Africa (in May 1943).
